The Grimsby 'Y' is a charitable organisation situated on the south side of the town about twenty minutes walk from the centre and close to the seaside resort of Cleethorpes. Both towns make up, with others, the Unitary Authority of North East Lincolnshire, formally South Humberside.
The Centre has the best of both worlds for, as well as being close to both town centres, it is also ideally located on the edge of the countryside and close to the local Weelsby Woods.
The Grimsby YMCA is a 70 bed hostel which caters for the homeless, with age ranges from 16 onwards, male and female.
The building also incorporates a four badminton court size Sports Hall with an outside full size football pitch.
The Sport and Activities side of the operation develops, organises and manages a full programme that allows members of the public of all ages to take part in a wide range of activities and events.
Our links with local schools has been highly successful in many areas. Over the last four years our primary schools Sports Hall Athletic Programme has developed from one league of four schools to four leagues of six schools. Two indoor athletic league meetings take place every Wednesday morning and afternoon during normal school time throughout the Autumn, Winter and Spring terms. During these two hour meetings, over 75 children of ages 9,10 and 11 years compete vigorously and vociferously against each other. Over the past four years over 5000 children will have experienced the joys and fun of athletics.
Our work also takes us into the community where we work with the local authority in many areas. During the Summer we successfully organised and run the CGU Startrack week, with help in coaching and leading coming from the two local athletic clubs, Cleethorpes AC and Grimsby Harriers, along with some of the YMCA's young volunteers.
Our work with the Basketball Development Group, the FA's Mini-Soccer Initiative, the Health Authority, local secondary schools and church groups and many other organisations allows us the freedom to help develop a healthy lifestyle to many sections of the community both within and outside of the county.
We offer, at the YMCA, a range of affordable low cost after-school activities where quality coaching is offered by our highly dedicated army of volunteers. A number of our young sports people have gone on to represent the county, district and junior international level at their chosen sport. Two of our coaches have been awarded the North East Lincolnshire Coach of the Year Award in recent years, in athletics and fencing.
To continue our development of young people in the world of sport and education relies a lot on charitable donations and the goodwill and dedication of our volunteers. If you feel you would like to make a donation to our cause please feel free to do so all or any donation will gratefully accepted. Donations by cheque should be made payable to Grimsby YMCA or if you wish, a cash donation could be made when you arrive. Prizes for our Christmas Draw would be equally acceptable.
I thank you for your generosity in advance.
